"Mission Santa Barbara"
linoleum cut, on rice paper, 12" x 9"
1940
Mission Santa Barbara was founded in 1786. The early church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812 and the new church was then severely damaged in a 1925 earthquake. It took two years of rebuilding and subsequent restoration to recreate the original appearance. This is the only mission in the California chain that has remained under the control of the Franciscans from founding to present time without interruption.
